About New Castle, New Hampshire

New Hampshire’s unique island community of New Castle is home to around 968 residents. Connected only to the mainland by bridges, seclusion gives the town a personality of its own. The town originally known as Great Island was incorporated in the year 1693 after separating from Portsmouth. New Castle has an intriguing history and is considered one of New Hampshire’s oldest settlements. New Castle is 2.3 square miles in size, the majority being made up of water. The town is the largest of several islands beginning at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.
